Timelines for the Re-Entry permit

2 weeks is very short time for getting reentry permit. Plan at least a month. You need to be physically present in the U.S. when filing for reentry permit. Then it takes 2-4 weeks for them to schedule you a date for fingerprinting.

This procedure is both costly and time consuming. I'm also outside on reentry permit, so I hope it will be useful upon my return :)

Good luck !

Why would I need to be physically present for the permit? I thought I'd apply for it over the internet and then be physically in the US by the time of the fingerprints and then leave the US and have them send it to my brother's place where he can send it to me back in my country... Won't that work???

No, the rule is that you must be physically in the US when applying for it, and when you show up for fingerprints, but you can leave the US in between those points in time, and after giving fingerprints.

If they realize you were outside the US when you applied for it, they will deny or revoke it.

Originally the rule was that you must be in the US when you apply for it, and there was no fingerprinting for it. Maybe now that there is fingerprinting, they should eliminate the rule that requires you to also be in the US when applying for it. But I think being in the US when filing the application is baked into the law and would require a legislative change which is outside the power of USCIS.
