I was just wondering if anyone knows how long it takes to get the EAD approved (Employement Authorization Document). My ND is August 4, 2006. Can someone awaiting adjustment of status work as a volunteer somewhere without the EAD and SSN??

Thanks.

If you'll look up near the top of the page ::points up::: there is a sticky thread called EAD TIMELINES. You'll get some idea there. It varies wildly. Some people are getting their Interview/GCs before the ead arrives. Some are getting theirs around day 77 for some reason. If you don't have your EAD by day 91, you can get an interim EAD at an Infopass Appt. at your district office.

I doubt if anyone would care if you want to feed the homeless, but I'd be careful about anything that could look even the least bit out of the ordinary to an outsider. Remember that anyone can call and make a report to Immigration. I may be paranoid, but I'm that way for a reason! Its the Govmit darnit :p

If you work for real volunteer organization, it is fine, but working for productive job (most of job at employer pursuing profit) is not allowed w/o authorization even without payment.
You can put this way. If there is someone who is doing the same job as yours with compensation, you need authorization.

Volunteer work is fine, in fact I've heard that people doing this got very positive comments in their AOS interview from their examiner.
