Three or Five Years?

From what I know, you could get a green card through marriage and then after keeping it for three years you will be able to apply for citizenship if you're married to an American, correct? Well, my question is, if you got a green card through other means(not marriage) but then right after that you married an American, will you still be able to apply for citizenship three years later or will you have to wait for five years since you didn't get your green card through marriage? Also, if it is possible to become an American three years later, will you have to prove that your marriage is "legitimate" or does that not matter since you're not trying to get a green card through marriage?

Thanks.

You can apply for naturalisation under the 3 year rule, as long as you fulfill the requirements. If you go this route, the validity of your ongoing marriage will be looked into.
