It happened to me 5 yrs ago. I was on F1 visa and was travelling thru ElPaso (We were driving to Las Vegas from Austin). We had to pass thru an immigration check point on I-10.
The immigration officer gave me a tough time, he said he would arrest me and put me in jail (I was not carrying my I-120 or passport). I tried to show him my School ID and Drivers license and he was not even ready to look at them.
Finally he gave me a warning and let me go. But that was 5 yrs ago... with the current environment I'm not sure if they would let u go with out proper documentation.
