All the tears (I admit that I shed tears -- in the pursuit of GC), pain, tension, lost peace of mind, compromises and countless other emotional instances.... I have endured them all for this day. I still distinctly remember being treated like "piece of garbage" at the lawyers office. Ofcourse! mine was an Indian attorney.
I wonder how they are still in business with the kind of treatment that they give
their clients, who pay them thousands of dollars. Many of you out there might wonder
why I did not question that kind of treatment. It's because I was afraid that they
would further mess up my case. Guys, those of you that are still in the process of
filing -- if possible everytime the lawyer's office submits applications to INS ask
them to mail them to you, so that you can check for any mistakes they made and you can
mail them. This will help you in two ways 1)many times when you call to find out if they
have filed certain application, they would lie to you saying that "they did it already".
If they send the papers to you to be mailed to INS, they can not lie to you and you
will have the power of tracking your mail 2)most of the time, these so called lawyers
do this; suppose they have to file form I - 750A for you, they open an existing file
of another person and replace the other persons detail's with your details.
What happens in this process is they will change certain things and leave certain
details from the previous application. Most of the times this is the reason of queries.
I got a query because they left out details from other persons application, which ofcourse
delays the process and causes unnecessary tension.

I've always vowed to myself that the day I get my green card, I will post the lawyers
names that I had bad experiences with on the forum. I will probably do that after I
get the card. This is not to publicize badly about them. But to give the information
to others who are in the process of choosing attornies and help them making the right
choice and hoping that they would not go through what I have endured.

Guys, let me know, am I the only person that had this bad experiences with lawyers
or there any others. Some of you might say that it is probably my behavior that got
me in to this situation. Let me say this -- It is definitely not my behavior that elicited this behavior
from the lawyers. I am a reasonable person, it is not like I called them 10 times
a day to find out about the satus or asked them unnecessary and annoying questions.

Congrats.....

Nice to know that u got ur GC. Attorneys are a necessary pain along the whole GC process. Now-a-days they are learning to be more responsive with very few clients on hand.
Anyway, Forgive and Forget.... Enjoy

Congratulations!!!! With regard to the situation with the attorney,
my sympathies are with you. I have come across a similar situation with an unscrupulous attornery a few years ago when I was applying for an H1 with one of my previous employers.
Thankfully, my current firm is much more professional.
It is also useful to keep a historical perspective. This nation has many great things about but what is also the case is that it has ALWAYS exploited people in a vulnerable position. Ask the native Americans or the African Americans......!!!!! What is unfortunate is that each group that comes here seems to perpetuate this. Some of the worst treatment I have received has been from my fellow countrymen!!! Of course there are exceptions to all of this and I have come across plenty of decent people. The bottom line is: do what your conscience tells you...

Congratulations

I am happy that your ordeal is over. Mine is still going on. I cannot believe that this country with so many good things has laws made out to exploit immigrants. If the immigrants appeal, they loose their right to stay here even for the appeal to be heard ??? They probably should follow the footsteps of Canada where the individual can apply based on his credentials directly without any lawyer and definitely without any company.

I am also working with an indian lawyer and get the same BBBAADDD treatment which seems to be their characterestic. The only guy who talks sense is the actual lawyer. His staff seems to be getting business out of his office. I was verry close to changing my lawyer. But then the company wants to only work with this lawyer since he is a friend of theirs !!!

Question from a beginner

I am just beginning to file for my GC and am in the process of looking out for lawyers. I live in the NY area. I was wondering where you filed yours from and if you could suggest some good lawyers (and also bad so that I can be careful)in this area if you know of any. Also I'd greatly appreciate it if you could let me know the price tags attached to each of the lawyers. I am getting some riduculously high quotes from some reputed lawyers in this area. I am not sure if that's what everybody is charging.
Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Congrats sai7843

Even I had to go through some painful process through my lawyer. I'll explain it once I get my GC. Lawyers don't have much time to talk to their clients (I wonder what they do  ) and thier staff won't have much knowledge in what they do.

I am so happy for you, I understand what you went thru with a "bad lawyer" experience. Mine is a Chinese lady. She was here in Chicago, the reason I chose her was that she practised alone and was close by, so I thought she was accesable. After taking up my case, she moved to NJ, Did not inform the Illinois labor dept. so the labor certificate was lost in the mail and wasted ONE YEAR of my time. I have never seen her, all I have is a PO BOX and phone number. I have to call het 20 times before I hear from her. She charged my company up the wazoo but acts as un professional as it gets. I have vowed to get even with her as soon as this thing is over. may be we should maintain a web page/link for "Lawyers to avoid" for the benifit of new people.

All the best.

I too had a bad experience with a Indian attorney in Texas. These attorneys know only Indians retain them still they don't treat fellow Indians with respect. This attorney wasted two years of my time/life

Example abound

Experiences like this - of Lawyers and companies abound. There are a lot of people who could tell stories - of this some are genuine cases of delay/problems and while some are pure exploitation, unprofessionalism and incompetentness. An example and an experience - my I-140 took 17 months (when everybody else was getting approved within 2-3 months) - thanks to my ex-attorney who 'already filed' but never actually filed - when I caught it.

Congrats Sai7843!! u deserve it. And you owe it to others to mention the - 'attorney to stay away'

Cheers!!
