Tell me about walk-in finger printing

Hello,
I've read in some posts people talking about doing an early or "walk-in" biometrics session. How does that work? to me it sounds like you just go to the local office and ask to be finger printed? Is that easy? Or you have to wait in line all day to see IF they get a chance to do yours...

Is this possible and common practice in all field offices?. If this is feasible, what are the real or proven benefits as in how much time is gained etc?

I received an email notification today that they just mailed my fingerprint letter.

Yes you can do your finger printing early. What you do is take the appointment letter, and explain that you would like to have your finger prints done.

Waiting and if they would let you do it that day would depend on how busy the office is that day.

In my case I live in a small town. I walk-in provided the appointment letter and got it done right away no waiting, actually the people doing the finger printing where just standing around waiting for someone.

In regard to time gain, from my experience I did mine early and got my interview notification and letter before the date my finger print appointment was scheduled.
 
Firstly, You should have received an appointment for the fingerprinting/ biometrics. Only with this in hand can you go in for a walk-in. If the USCIS office that serves your area is a busy one with a lot of applications then you may have to wait for your turn as many others might have also turned up for fingerprinting. Otherwise, you can just go in and get your fingerprints taken.

Thanks to both. Yes, I received my appointment letter last week scheduled for 11/3. I was wondering if this was a common practice or they would look at me like I'm crazy and turn me down.
Now, knowing that a lot of people do it, I just might as well go in monday.
 
Hello all,

I did a walk in for FingerPrinting at the Chicago Broadway Application Support Center. I was initially scheduled for 7th November 2012 and my wife for 8th November 2012. Today is 29 October 2012.

The office was empty. However, the officer at the entry desk looked at the appointment letters and asked why we are coming in early when our appointment date is 1 week later. I said that we may be out of town at that time. He asked 'Do you have plane tickets' - This was weird. I said 'No - We will be travelling locally out of town'. He then asked 'When will you be travelling out of town'....

Finally - he told us to come on the morning of the day of our travel. He handed over to us the "Applicant Information Worksheet" and requested us to have it filled and it will be quick on that day.

So we will have to go back on 7th November 2012 at 8 am... which is just 1 day earlier than our allotted time.
