TD Travel outside North America

I understand that TN holders must surrender their I-94 if travelling to Europe; is there a similar requirement for TD holders? I am a Canadian citizen with a recently renewed TD and wish to travel next month to Costa Rica (not Europe, but not North America either). Could someone please clarify any travel restrictions for TD holders?

Both TN and TD are multiple entry. You should not surrender your I-94 under any circumstances, or else you will need to reapply for TN/TD status upon re-entry.

That's kind of scary. My husband (TN) was told upon returning from Ireland last year that he should have surrendered his I-94 and retained copies of his TN documentation in order to get a replacement I-94 on readmission. It sounded like he was not re-applying for TN status, just getting re-admitted based on the original paperwork.

I DON'T want him to have to reapply for TN status just so I can get home from a trip.

Since TD status is entirely predicated on being the spouse or child of a TN holder, "reapplying" is trivial and the I-94 can be surrendered without worries. I'd try and keep the TN I-94, but if the documentation is in order and a copy of the previous I-94 is retained, one should be OK.

Why would he have to? So long as he has valid TN status you can be readmitted as a TD without difficulties. Just show a copy of his I-94 and your marriage certificate.
