My wife is planning to fly from oversea and renew her TD at JFK. Of course, she will bring all the necessary documents with her.

Any potential problems?

Thx

no problems as long as she is a Canadian citizen.

Nope, she should be able to get a new TN that way without a problem. I never did it before, but tried to once when I was over working in India for a short time for the company I worked for. When I came back I was about a month away from my TN expiring and I enquired when I got back to the airport from the US. They said they were able to issue me a new TN, however being I still had a month left, they said I needed to wait till closer to the date. So if hers is expiring within a couple of weeks they should be able to still do that. Maybe they will still give her a new TN if it's a month away? Not sure what it's like now, but years ago, it was very possible and just the same as getting a new TN from driving to the border...

When I came back from Pakistan my TN has 9 months left on it, the immigration officer told me that he can give me 9 months TN free of charge and if I want the 12 months TN I have to pay $56, and I choose to take the 12 months TN.

I surrendered my TN when I left US.
the POA was IAD (Newark Airport NJ).

All depends on the agent. I have a friend who commutes from Windsor to Detroit everyday. He tried to get his new TN 3 weeks in advance and they told him that's too early and refused to set him up with his new TN. He eventually went back a few days before and got it.

Actually this entire post was about getting the TD not a new TN. Sorry, I miss read that. I don't think there will be much of a difference with getting a new TN or getting a TD flying into the airport. If you wife is comming in alone, they might wonder why you weren't with her or something. Other then that I can't seen any problems...

Thanks for everyone's response.

I just renewed my TN at the Buffalo POE last week (3 days before its expiration date). My wife left US to attend some family matters in January and her TD status had since expired while she was away.

The only concern I have is that she did NOT surrender the I-94 when she flew out of the US, but again she was still in status back then and the I-94 was labeled "Multiple-Entry".

Well at least you got a new TN so you're still valid. You don't need to surrender the I-94 at all. It's a multiple entry one, just some airlines don't seem to understand that at all. Now the fact that her TD is already expired and out of status might be an issue though I think. I'm not sure how that really works at all, but you may want to check into that a little deeper if you don't get any other responses here...

Why would it be an issue, if she left the US before it expired? (I'd bring the travel itinerary to prove if asked, but if she left by air I'm pretty sure CBP already knows when she left.)

Yes she left by air, though the airline staff did not take away her I-94. So how would the CBP know she left the country?

Thanks.

The airlines send passenger manifests to CBP. In the worst case, does she have any proof that she left the US before the I-94 expired, like the itinerary, the boarding pass or an entry stamp on her passport?

Because I have no knowledge of the TD and originally thought this was a about a TN. I know a TN can just get a new one while out of the country and it's expired, but I wasn't sure how a TD works in that manner if it's the same or not as the TN. I just thought maybe the TD needs to be accompanied by the TN when getting their TD that's why...
