tax returns for filing I-485

I came to know from a friend that you have to submit tax returns for previous two years while filing I-485. Can anyone confirm that is it mandatory, or is it a condition at all? If one cannot submit those, then what is the way out?

Yes I thk it is required to submit the Tax returns for the last 3 years.. If not u can expect to get a "RFE".. which might cause additional delays..

it is no required, i haven't aware of any case ot rfe on the tax returns.

You need to take them for interview to be on safe side. Most of the time they wont ask.
