Tax returns for 2010 - clarifications

I'm single, temporarily living outside the United States on re-entry permit. My status is student so I don't earn much money.

If I add up all my worldwide income (wages, interests on saving accounts - both foreign and the U.S.) it's under $1000 total. My parents support me by sending me some money - I guess I don't have to claim/report those, right?

So with this case, many people tell me I don't need to file any tax return. Is that information correct? However, immigration guides say, that permanent residents are required to file U.S. tax returns.

Who can shed some light onto this issue and clarify it?

My only goal is not to have any trouble with IRS or immigration and thus have a peace on mind :)

That is true, but with exceptions ... citizens and permanent residents are required to file a return if their income is above the threshold to be required to file, or they have certain transactions that require filing (e.g. selling a house).

From what you've described about your situation, it appears you don't need to file.

He said his goal was to avoid having complications and get peace of mind.

Besides, my tax returns (with foreign investment income, numerous itemized deductions, capital losses, etc.) take around 60 minutes a year to do. We're not exactly talking an onerous burden.

Two years ago I filed my tax return with all zeros, and IRS didn't accept it. Being LPR, if you don't file (because you make less money than the threshold), I wonder if you can run into immig. problems ... ?
