Tax question for N400

I've already submitted my app for naturalization earlier this month, but just this week my accountant and I found a mistake in last year's tax return. I'm going to be refiling, and I owe an additional $500 in taxes. I never received anything from the IRS about this, it's completely proactive.

Should I amend my naturalization forms becuase of this? What should I do? At the time of filing, I had no idea about the mistake and it should be resolved well before any interview...

Thanks,

SS

Don't worry..you'll have a chance to update this at interview. By then you should have paid the $500 so it won't be an issue.

Except that it will actually be $500 + interest + (possibly) a penalty that is owed. The OP will need to file the amended return, make the $500 payment and then wait for the IRS to indicate how much more they are still owed. This could take longer.

Even then, showing the IO at interview that you have taken the appropriate steps to correct the mistake would be sufficient.

Thanks for the responses! We already have our accountant amending the return so should be all set within the next few days (fingers crossed...)

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Everybody makes mistakes. If everything is OK by your interview date, you don't have to disclose it. Just make sure you don't own any money to IRS before your interview.

Even the Head of IRS made mistakes and he got elected.
