Switching Jobs - H1B Transfer Question

I am about to switch jobs and hence initiate the transfer of my H1B visa to my new employer.
I have been advised that the visa transfer process (regular processing) takes about 4
months but I can start working right away. Now I have a personal trip planned to Italy in a couple of months. My question is - Can I re-enter the US even if (assuming the worst case) my ex employer has cancelled my existing H1B and my new visa is still in the processing/transfer state? Or Do I have to wait till I get the visa transferred, travel to Canada/Mexico to get the new visa stamped and then make the trip to Italy? Appreciate all help!

If you have a receipt notice you can travel to Italy.
If your H1 transfer is approved and the old visa in the passport is still valid, you can come back into US.
If the visa in passport is expired (after H1 approval) you need a visa stamp in the passport to come back into US. You can try St.Louis, canada, mexico or Italy.
