Hi,

My Indian passport was cancelled a year back when I had applied for a visa for travelling to India. Do I still need to pay $175.00 to get that certificate ?

Please Advice

Thanks

If you want to do any business with Indian Consular Services ... unfortunately it looks like Yes, you would have to get the Gold Plated Surrender Certificate.... Now would they force you into paying the $175 I am not sure about it, since you already have Gold "Canceled" Stamp on your Indian Passport.

Thanks sam012007 :)

I have applied for my OCI on 7-May-2010. Even though my Indian passport is marked cancelled, I guess I would still need to shell out $175.00 to get that certificate.

The MHA is cash strapped and could use more innovative ideas to make up the defecit:

They could introduce a fee for phone inquiries. $50 to get to a rep to answer your questions about the pending OCI or visa. The could provide precise info on the status like "check after 30 days", "wait for 2 weeks", "we misplaced/lost your passport" etc.

Introduce a fast track OCI process for a premium. $1050 sounds about right. Those who opt for odinary processing would have to wait a coule of years before the OCI is processed; that is if they did not shred your application by mistake. Why not? OCI is touted as Indian greencard. We waited years to get US greencard, so why not for Indian greencard?

Decrease the validilty of the Indian passport to 3 years from 10 years.

Why deficit? What do they do with the money?? You ask too many question.

First of all, why is the visa so cheap? Why give out India visa for a 100 dollars? It is worth 10 times.
Then every trip you make, tag on an MHA "trip" fee. Whether it be with visa, PIO or OCI.
Then every day you stay in India - USD 10, payable daily in the FRRO office.
Pretty soon flights will be back to paying in USD than INR ... along with the "domestic trip fee".

----------- Don’t worry we are going to increase that and if your passport is sent for VISA then we may ask more Fee any day and you will not Get Visa as we don’t post in Advance that Fees from Date… will be XXX amount:)

We have plan for that and you will be surprised to know one day when you land at Indian Airport we are going to ask LANDING fee of USD 200, No Rupees only 200USD so keep 200USD with you and you may have to submit the Landing Fee to Customs officer when you show your Visa/PIO/OCO:)
Then every day you stay in India - USD 10, payable daily in the FRRO office.
-----------If you need that FRRO constable collect Fees from your home address then fees will be 15USD + 500 Indian Rupees Every days+Tea and small gift to FRRO constable(Gift should be from USA):)

------ Hotel stay, Train tickets, Domestic Air ticket, Mumbai Local Train ticket, Taxi to or from Indian Airport all should be paid in USD. All the Bribe to all the Departments have to be in USD.:)
