Supporting documents sent after interview, how can I know my status?

About three months ago I had my interview and the interviewer asked me to send supporting documents regarding proof of residency in the U.S. I gathered all the documents and send them to their office after two weeks. Now I wonder how I can check my status. I checked my status with the automated customer service phone number and it said there was no record of my file and I need to check it with my local immigration office.
Has anyone experienced the situation of sending documents after the interview? Can you tell me how I can follow up my case? Is it possible that my documents are lost? IF they are lost already, will I receive a letter of denial or they don't let me know at all and just withdraw my application? Thanks
