I am about to send in my n400 and there is only one set of documents that is required to be sent. This is related to a DUI arrest that I had back in 1995. Back then, I was offered an alternative program (alcohol related class, etc.) and that led to all charges being dropped and record expunged. I see that the the instructions ask that original or court certified documents be submitted with the n400. I do have the related paperwork (have been saving it for a rainy day). Should I send in the originals? My fear is that I dont get them back...after having saved them this long.

I wouldn't even know how to obtain court certified docs after almost 20 years (different city/state). Please advise

I called the court and they said I have to drive there (I am now in MD) and request the paperwork, and since it has been so long ago, it may take them time to find it and then I have to go there again to pick up. Will sending the originals be ok?
 
Don't send the originals with the application. Send copies with the application, bring the originals to the interview.

Thanks. Would that pose any risk at all? The instructions clearly say original or court certified copies. Do you think they will reject me automatically because I sent a photocopy? Maybe I could write a not with it saying that I will bring in the original? This was in 1995 so not sure they care much for it. My record is clean otherwise. Thanks

No, they will not reject it automatically for that reason.

If you send the originals with the application, there is the risk that USCIS staff will misfile them, and if that happens you won't have the originals at all.

Makes sense, and I like this approach for the exact reason you state. Once they review my application, they send a letter asking you to bring any documentation that they need, correct?

Also, other than this, its really just the n-400, the GC copy, photos and the check, right?

Did you get the GC before or after 1995 DUI arrest? If after that and you already sent original when you did I-485, the USCIS
probaly still have the original in their file
