Hi,
My H1-B 7th year extesion and my wife's H4 to H1-B stamping done successfully in Ottawa on Sep 19th. It was really cool. I was very scared for wife's stamping. But my experience at the embassy was so smooth and I am very happy.I stayed in one of our family friend's house.
Myself and my wife carried all the necessary documentation but the did not see any of them. Our appointment was at 9.30 AM on Sep 19th. We reached the embassy by 9 AM. We took two seperate appointments as we both are on H1-B. But officer told to my wife need not to take two seperate one when he was interviewing my wife.
Here is my experience with the interview officer.
1. As soon as I got into the embassy I paid $100 fee and submitted my passport, H1-B approval to the cashier. He did not give me any receipt like that. I just went and sat in the chair waiting for my interview turn.
2. Then my wife also came in and did the same.
3. After half an hour wiat I was called by the offier from Window 1. I approrched the officer and wished him. He asked me the letter from the employer. I handed over that through the window. He just looked into it and asked me whether I have US degree.I said "no" and told I have BS in computers from Indian University. He asked me to show the certificate and I showed it through the window. He not even took it into his hands.
3. He asked me to put my index fingure on the machine and took my finger prints.
4. Officer asked me to pay $50 to the cashier and come back to him with the receipt.
5. Paid $50 and showed the receipt to the Officer. He gave one coupon kind of paper which has some number to identify my passport and asked to collect passport next day 3 PM.
My wife's experience
1. As soon as mine is done officer called my wife's name.
2. He asked whether she was on H4 prior to H1.She said yes. He again asked "The one who showed prior to you is your husband?". She said "yes". He told you should have come together and no need to take two seperate appointments.
3. He asked emploer's letter and she showed it. He asked again "Is there any difference between Software Engineer and Programmer analyst?" because her letter was showing the designation as Programmer analyst but mine was Software Engineer. SHe said no difference just different terms.
4. Then he took fingure prints for her too and aksed to pay $50.
I strongly recommend to go to OTTAWA for anybody. They officers are very cool and Ottwa is very nice place to roam around.
I saw one lady interview officer was interviewing to only Muslim country citizens (I think window 3) and she was asking lot of questions and she was rejecting for few also.
Hope my experience will help you guys.
