successful F1 stamping in India

I wanted to share my experience of getting F1 visa stamping in India this month after I had earlier changed my status from H4 to F1 within the US.

I carried with me all the required documents and the officer checked everything, including my GRE and TOEFL scores, financial support documents (bank balance, property documents etc).

One thing I felt helped my cause was that I had already done one semester at the university and I had taken an unofficial transcript showing that I had maintained full-time status and was also registered full-time for Spring 2006. I also took a letter from the Dean stating that I had been studying there etc, lending an air of authenticity.

Best of Luck to all those in a similar situation. Just make sure you take all the proper documents with you, as they can ask for anything. Btw, my visa is valid till Dec 2010..although the I-20 is valid till Mar 2008.

phoenixdesi,

Thanks a ton for sharing your experience. I have a few questions, hopefully you'll be able to answer them:

* were there any questions regarding your spouse? [ i.e your spouse's H1B status and whether you would return to India at all]

* Had your spouse filed for LC?

Thanks in advance!

I, too have converted my vista status from H4 to F1 and now am planning to go to India for stamping. I have admission from the university and completed one quarter. I wanted to ask you that if my GRE score is less (around 1250/2400), can this be a reason for rejection. Any idea?

RE: LC and GRE

My husband had his Labor Certification approved but hadn't applied for the I-140 yet when I went for F1 stamping to India. The officer didnt ask me anything about my husband (who's on an H1-B visa). In fact, my sister is a green card holder and I had to mention that too in the application, but the officer didn't ask about her either.

As for the GRE score, the officer did check it..but didn't say anything. So I have no idea if it is a factor.

Good Luck!

Question

Thanks for your post PhoenixDesi. I have been a little stressed out over this in the absense of anyone sharing the actual experience at the embassy.

We are in a similar situation. My wife has to go for her F1 Visa stamping this December. Do you remember what you filled in the DS-156 and 157 for whether your spouse has applied for immigration into the USA? Does it matter to the consulars there?

Re: DS 156/157

Dietcoke:

I had mentioned Not applied for Green Card, as my husband hadn't applied for the I-140 yet. Only his Labor Certification had been approved at that stage.

But if you have already applied for I-140, you would have to say yes.

F1 Visa Stamping

Hi Guys,

I am in a similar situation right now like the one you were in. I was on H1B and I have changed my status from H1B to F1. I have joined my university as a full-time student and now I need to get F1 visa stamping. I would like to know few things about F1 stamping.

• Should I go to Canada or Mexico? Which one would be quick and easy?
• Does the processing time differ from one US Consulate to other? Is there any particular US Consulate/Embassy in Canada or Mexico that I should be going to so the process is quick and easy for me?
• What documents do I need to provide to the US Consulate? Do the document requirements differ from one US Consulate to the other?
• How much time the visa stamping process would take?
• Since my status has already been changed are there still any chances of rejections? If yes, then what are my options?
• How sooner do I need to take appointment with the US Consulate? How much is the waiting period?

Your feedback would be highly appreciated. Thanking you in advance.

Ankit Patel.

Hello All,
I have questions about the change of status.
I plan to change my visa status from H4 to F1 . I want to go to Mexico for

that.

Which one do you think is a better option ,Going to India or Canada /Mexico?
If any of you have been to Mexico/Canda /India ,Please Let me know about your

experiences .

In case of rejection of my F1 , Can i come back to US on my H4 (H4 is valid

till 2008)?

Also , do we have to submit the I-539 form for change of status?or only

Ds-156,DS-157, DS-158?

Your reply is needed urgently , and will be greatly appreciated.
