Folks,

My interview at Mumbai Consulate went
smoothly. No surprises, nothing different
from what many people have already described in detail.

Thanks to all the folks who are so helpful
in answering question. I found out about
AC140 and many details about CP
from this board.

Thanks to Rajiv Khanna for supporting this
very useful forum.

Congrats. Do post your details when you get back.

Good luck at the POE.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the wishes.

We entered through SFO. Knew from this forum that there is a
separate line for new immigrants. The officer was busy with
someone, we were the 1st in line. Another office came and
got our signatures/finger prints on the forms. This other officer
was quite jovial and inquired why I decided to do CP, "much quicker"
I said. Officer in the booth stamped the passport valid for
one year told us where we need to go if we do not get the cards
before stamp expires. That was it..

At the consulate :

I carried USD cash. Had to fill the form with serial number and
denomination for each bill. (Save ~ 1000 Rs. in exchange rate).

While collecting papers the Indian lady asked if I have applied for
H1B extension (my H1 had expired), asked for approval notice. I had
the copy of receipt which she tool a look at and returned.

Asked for Passports, photos, BCs, Marriage certificate, offer of
employment, PCCs (from local Indian consulate only), Affidavit of support.
One of our BC was issued recently so I had also attached a School leaving
cert. To which the lady said "Good".

The interview was quick. 3-4 questions to me :

What is your job title?
- told job title.
Is that the exact job title?
- told exact job title.

How many employees at company?

How long working there?

And one to my wife :

how long are you married?.

Told the visas are granted and we could collect them at 3:30.

Went to the consulate at 3:15, there was queue already. But for some
reason they started issuing visas only at 4:10.

One thing : I had read on this forum not to go to a photographer and
try to teach him how to take immigration photographs. But I have to
learn everything myself. Went to a photographer and showed him the
printout showing the requirements for immigration photographs. Despite
having a Digital camera and photo printer the photos he gave did no
look acceptable so one day before interview went to "my own studio".
Man this guy is milking money. 250 Rs. each for instant photos!

Once again thanks everyone and best wishes for others in line for CP!

??? What did you mean by if card does not come you need to go WHERE????

Sure enough that My own photo studio guy is milking money but still it is just about $6 (Rs. 250) but better than sears/ jcpenney/ other places out here who take $20 for the same!

All the best!

Clarification

If I go for AC-140, can I pay the visa fee ($335/person) in US$ cash? I wasn't aware of this. Does the US consulate Mumbai's site confirm this, could anyone please point me to it.

Thanks
titu

What options does one have if not able to get School Leaving certificate & Birth Certificate has been issued recently?

Cash not preferred...although in very exceptional cases they may have accepted but it is not a preferred way of payment.
Read this:

If you do not have SLC and BC, then approach municpal authorities where you were born, request a new BC if you get it GREAT!! If they do not have your BC records, then they will issue Non-Availability Certificate and NAC along with 2 birth affidavits from your family (parents/ elder siblings/ relatives elder than you) will be good enough to substitute for your missing BC for the cp interview! REsearch for a sample of afffidavit of birth!

Thanks kd1403 for the response.

Looks like I did not make myself clear. I have been able to get birth certificate but it has been issued just recently & I read on this forum somewhere that if BC had been issued recently & not when you were born, one may need some affidavits from parents or any other documents like School leaving Certificate etc. Is this true?

Will appreciate any advice on this.

tito9:

That is not entirely true but to play safe it is always recommended to carry SLC which shows your DOB plus affidavits in a case where BC has just been issued! Again this is a recommended approach to be safe.

Hi aosorcp,

I thought the consulate sends the approved papers with passport by mail...and you are given a choice of mailing address. Is it different from consulates to consulate? I am waiting for an interview at chennai consulate.

Also what is the visa that you are referring to in the above line...

Thanks
Meera

meera:

Bombay and New Delhi by default give passports along with GC approval envelope same evening by 4pm whereas Chennai by default couriers the passport and GC approval envelope that interview evening so that candidates get them next day or latest the day after. Above are by default...

And there are exceptions on a case-by-case basis where you can always request courier in Bombay and NWD consulate by payment of courier fees or hand over documents in person @ Chennai by not paying the courier fees.

Got Cards!

Got the cards! Got welcome notices 3 weeks after POE and Cards within 2-3 days after that.

Once again, thanks everyone for your help.
