I am F-1 student just married to USC. I changed my last name on my driver's license with no problem, but then my application for social security card name change was rejected. I was told that Regulations for F-1 students and social security numbers changed in October of 2004. After that date, F-1 students are not able to apply for social security numbers unless they have been offered an on-campus job. And I dont have a job on campus.
So these regulations also apply to F-1 students who are wanting to change their name?
Now I am ready to file I 485, 130 etc. Which name should I use? my maiden name on the SS card or the name on my driver's license?

thanks

When you apply for adjustment of status you should put your REAL, birth name. There is space to put "other names or aliases" too. In general you will have to put ALL your names in the application. But the one that should be as first is your name at birth.

when you apply for AOS, use the name you want your GC to have. I applied in my married name, even though all of my docs are still in maiden name. I already got my GC, but my DL still has my maiden name. No problems. I didn't have any problems changing my name on my SSN - all the SSA office needed was my marriage certificate and my passport. SInce they are so stubborn, my advise - wait till you have your work permit (with your new married name) and then go to the SSA. . You shouldn't have any problems changing your name.

Upps I thought that it was a man didn't read the part of "maiden name"....actually I used my married name in my forms, but anyway I have to put my maiden name in other names.
As LucyMo said it doesn't matter which name you use, maiden or married. Actually in this forum was a very clearly discussion about this theme, please search. At the end is your call, maiden or married, doesn't matter if your SSN is with your maiden name, because in your USCIS forms you need to put your maiden name too! everything is cover!!! Hey! we are living in this century women can make the call they want...yahoooo.
Good luck,
