Store refusing to return my passport

I am currently applying for my citizenship via my mother's lawyer in Chicago. I live near Charlotte, NC. They have been asking me to send a color copy of the biographical page of my passport even though it's been expired since 2005. I went to my local Staples and used one of their self service color copiers.

Unfortunately I forgot my passport in there and when I went back to get my passport they refused to return it to me and said that they are sending it to a police station.

Are they allowed to do this? Why would my mother's lawyer tell me to do something that would break the law? Can anyone please clarify this for me?

Thank you.

Sorry to hear your case.

I don't think your lawyer is doing something illegal by asking you to send photocopy of your own passport. On the other hand, store employees can do weird things.

Can you not ask them which police station they are sending it and get it from there? I am sure you have other photo ids that you can use at station to prove who you are.

Did you try to talk to store manager? If not, try that. Sometimes managers may have more sense.

Good luck

Were you making copy of passport of Cettificate.I would think. Some folks still are under the impression it is ilegal to make copies of that. I would definetly talk to store manager .

I don't get why it was requested to be in color, black and white has much fewer legal/counterfeit issues. At least you have the copy to send to the lawyer, you can take a few days to clarify things with police/store manager.

Most stores have useless tenagers working and the store manager may be one too. Try talking to the mgr and try to scare them for keeping something that lawfully does not belong to them.

Think about it...

A store employee finds a lost passport, what would you do if you were the manager? If it were me, I'd send it to the police.

It's like the time I left my Visa card at a store. I realized what happened and hustled back to the store about an hour later. The store said that they'd phoned Visa who had told them to cut the card up. They gave me the pieces. I had to get a new card.

As "TheRealCanadian" (wow, I guess since I'm naturalized now I shouldn't take offense) says, just go to the police and ask for it back. Bring *lots* of ID.

go to the store where you lost your passport, call the police while you are there, have the police show up and explain what happend right there. Most likely, you will get out of the store with your passport.

Hi Bulok,

I hope you can come back to this forum in a couple of days and tell us how you got your passort back. I am sure it is going to be interesting reading ;)
