Stolen Passport/TN

Hi all. Had my passport with my I-94 TN card in it stolen about a month ago here in the US. Have gone through the process of declaring passport stolen, and having passport renewed by mail, and the new one arrived today.

My original I-94 was set to expire in June and now I am wondering about the process. I know you normally can't 'renew' your TN at the POE until it is almost expired (is there an actual limit to how far out a renewal can happen?), so I am assuming that essentially when I go back to Canada next time, in three weeks, that I will simply report the TN lost to the US border agent and then apply for a 'new' TN with my new passport? (and of course with a letter from my employer, etc)

Will I get grief for remaining in the US while said passport was being renewed (essentially, without being in physical possesion on my valid I-94)? Should I report my TN stolen prior to going to the border? Any other issues I am missing?

Really appreciate any advice/comments from the group,

Thanks!

Since you have a copy of your original I-94, you will use this upon re-entry, and they will issue you a new one.

I would carry a new TN petition package, but you would be throwing a way 3 months of TN. What if you ahd lost the passport 2 weeks into TN?

You can also have your I-94 replaced by mail. See USCIS website.

Living in Us without an I-94 is not recommended. Neither is going to the border without proof that you are in status.

I believe he said his I-94 was stolen with the passport.

I had the exact same thing happen to me, here is the link to the posts http://www.immigrationportal.com/showthread.php?t=247083

You can file for a replacement I-94 at a cost of a little over $100 i think (EDIT: i just checked and the fee is $320 now, ouch!), I didnt report mine stolen, you just cant leave the country while your I-94 is lost.

I just waited until my TN was expiring (in June as well, and i lost mine in april, is this the twilight zone? are you bizarro pete?) and applied for a new one. They didnt ask me for my previous I-94 when I was at the POE, they just gave me a new one.

Although the difference between us was mine was lost in my home somewhere, yours was stolen which means it is in the hands of someone else. So it may be best to report the I-94 stolen.

It is clear his I-94 was stolen. I said "Since you have a copy of your original I-94...". If he does, he can use this and the police report to explain any circumastance. If he doesn't, shame on him.

I have both

I have a photo copy of the i94 and the police report. The 'losing thre months of TN' to me I understand. I will be going home in May, so I am just going to file for a 'renewal' then.

Thanks all for the confirmation.

Bizzaro Pete ;-)
