Staying out of the US while holding H-1B visa

I am on H-1B visa and I have about 2 years left on that. I am going to be out of USA for 3 or 6 months due to a family emergency. My firm agreed to keep my employment status during my long absence.
How long can I stay out of the USA in this situation? Is that going to be a problem when I return to the US? Thanks
 
The US does not care about your visa status as long as you are not in the US.
Keep the employer's letter to show at POE when you enter the US next time.
