Stay in foreign country under H1 visa

Hi, I have a project that will be going on outside of US for more than 6 months, which requires me to stay out of US for the period. Is it possible for me to stay out of US under H1 visa status for more than 6 months? Any kind of reply would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

----- H1 status is to work in US not out side US. when you work out of US you are not on H1 status when again you enter US with H1 visa stamp you again enter on H1 status
