Does anybody know whether a F-1 holder is obligated or required to report this to his enrolled school after she filed her 485 and it is pending? Please share the experience. What's her current status?

It is good idea to report them (School) about any VISA change espcially from F1 and /or J1 VISA. after filling AOS (I485) F1 VISa is invalid and he/she is on pensing AOS status. F1 VISa holders do get EAD based on F1 visa sometime but thats due to lack of comunication/information at BCIS but if F1 VISA holdr wants to work he/she shd use EAD based on AOS pending.

Thank you very much. Eb1doc. You are good. But somesites mention that the reporting to school could lead to the name removal from the SEVIS, this could cause the problem if 485 is denied while the student is still in school. What is your opinion?
Is it possible for F-1 holder to apply for H-1 in order to work? Thanks

Well I have a colleauge who have done nothing to inform about changed status of spouse (who is F1). You mean to say F1 with pending AOS..I beleive yes! H1 is dual intent VISA but most of the time it is seen that F1 finds it difficult to get jobs with H1 sponsor so they wisely use AOS based EAD for job search!!!! The problem is if I485 is denied then you dont have any status. nor F1 nor PR.Therefore it is risk to file I485 while in F1. You can not go back to F1 since it is not dual intent visa.In that case you canot continue with school unless you go on some other nonimmigrant visa.

Thats True....thats why some people wait till I-140 gets approved and then file I-485 (especially who have Spouse on F1 studying). Because chances of I-485 getting rejected are very less....................Plan B to avoid spouse from getting OUT of status is getting H4 for her (assuming that u r on H1). There is provision (at thsi stage....I am not sure how??) to get back on F1 from H4........more input will be appreciated!!!!
