what are the options open once somebody's green card petition is denied? Is there any way to adjust his status in a nonimmigrant visa?

If you have an existing H1 or L1 VISA - you can still stay and work and may be try to refile. If no - you can appeal against the denial - I think you can stay till the appeal is heard.
