I am kinda confused now...

I have to pay taxes to the state which i found out recently. As soon as i found out that i owe taxes, i called them and asked them to put me on a payment plan. They are going to be sending me all the paperwork.

I can take this when i go to the citizenship interviw and let the officier know that Yes, i owe taxes to the State. here is a copy of the payment plan etc.

Please advice what i need to do.

Just let the IO know that you have arranged a payment plan with your state tax agency. Owing taxes with a payment plan is perfectly ok. However, owing taxes and avoiding to pay them is not.

Are we talking 'owing' like, a few hundred dollars, or, like, owing like 'did not file'? If we're talking normal withholding based state tax, in 25 years of paying, I don't recall ever being + or - more than a couple hundred dollars in income ranging from peon to six figures. Such amounts would not be getting into payment plans.

Also, would they be concerned about how the deficiency came to be, who identified it (audit, you, etc) and how long ago. Or, are we talking business owner type situations instead of salaried employee type... These are all questions I'd think about...

I know a professor at Rutgers. He never filed state tax return
to NJ and he did not care even most likely he could got refund.

He did not care either when he answer No to all tax questions
on N400. He got his citizenship. He had some difficulty in the
process but they were about his name check pending

Thanks for your quick response

I have filed my taxes always on Time before April 15th. Every Single Year and If i end up paying, i make sure that i pay them back to the last penny.

This year when i filed my taxes, there was some confusion in the preparation as one of my W2's came late ..had an error and then for State it came out that we had to pay taxes...as soon as i came to know that i paid around $250 but the amount was like $2000 something.

So, i immediately called and explained and told them i would like to go on a payment plan.

Does this help or did i confuse you more :-(

Thanks for your help again.
