Start working before H1 transfer

Dear All,
My H1 status with my current employer is for 6 months, till Dec 2005. I am not subject to H1 cap. I am planning to begin applying to other employers. My questions are:

What should i mention as my joining date in the cover letter? In other words, how long does it take for the H1 transfer to be completed? I read in some thread that one can start working for new employer once H1 transfer has been applied for ie actual approval is not needed. Is this true?

Further, is this new employment valid only till the expiry date of my current I-94 ie will i be able to work for my new employer only till Dec 2005 if my H1 transfer approval is not received before that?

Thanks for any input.

Thanks for the prompt reply but I need to clarify the following once again:

Once I start working for my new employer based on the USCIS receipt of my H1 transfer, can I continue working even after my current I-94 expires (Dec 2005) and i have yet not received my H1 transfer approval from USCIS?

Btw, my current employer gave me H1 only for 6 months (this is my first H1, I was on J1 before this), is it mandatory that H1 has to be given for 3 years?
