I travelled to Toronto by Air from US in May 2003. I offered my passport and the GC on the arrival at Toronto, but only my GC was enough for the officer. He did not stamp my passport.
On the return next day, I was taking flight to US from Toronto . I had to go through US immigration check right there at the Toronto airport. The officer thoroughly checked my passport and GC. He stamped my passport for admitting into USA as ARC. On arrival at the US airport there was no immigration check needed and I was through like a domestic passenger.

This is a normal procedure for Canada. You go through US immigration at the Canadian Airport.

I visited Canada a year ago...and on my way back, the US Immigration officer only looked at my green card at the Ottawa airport. He did not even look at my passport.
