I was on a H1 visa when I turned 26 (and before that on F1). How does one get a letter from the Selective Service indicating that they did not need to register. I am 31 now and there seems to be something about having to register between 26 and 31. Confused on this requirement and would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks.

The requirement to register for selective service only applied to males aged 18 through 25 living in the US, execpt those on non-immigrant visa (F-1, H1B.etc..), so you didn't need to register. The 26 to 31 age reference you are referring to applies to male naturalization applicants who must must demonstrate that they did not knowingly or willfully fail to register or were otherwise not required to register. In order to obtain such evidence, you can contact the selective service and requests a "status information letter" by calling them at 1-847-688-6888 (stay on the line until the operator answers) or write to Selective Service System, PO Box 94638, Palatine, IL 60094-4638. Be prepared to provide the dates of your F1 and H1B visa to demonstrate that you were not required to register at the time.
