SSN/Tax ID number for wife who is in AOS process

I filed I-130, I-485 and I-765 for my wife in July. She is adjusting from B2 to permanent resident. She does not have a SSN nor a Tax ID number, so we filed all paperwork without.
She wants to open up a checking account at my bank but they require a SSN or Tax ID.. I assume that she is eligible for a SSN after her EOD is done. However, can I get a Tax ID number for her now and later convert it to a SSN? My understanding is that she can't have a SSN and a separate Tax ID number. They have to be the same. So, how is the process so that she will only have one number.. How does the Tax ID convert to a SSN or does it not?
Any information is appreciated..

Another issue is her Florida drivers license. She has one but she can't renew as she has a specific temporary license and it is only issued for the time of her I-94. Her I-94 experied 1 day after filing her paperwork.. Now I wonder if there's a way to renew her drivers license just with the Receipt notices for her immigration paperwork. Her status is pending and therefore she is legally in the country...

Not until you file your tax return for 2007 next year. The EAD and SSN will be faster.

You can try.

In my case, I filed for tax return with my spouse. Later they sent me a letter assigning me a tax id number. However, they told me to call them as soon as I get a SSN so they can update that in their database. They will then replace my tax id number with my SSN.

You both are correct as I have a tax id number also. As soon as you get your SS number you can go in with your card to the local office, not to sure if they will except it over the phone though as with USCIS they want physical proof. But who know when and if I get my ss# I'll try calling before I make the trip.

Thanks for the answers! I know that I can get a tax ID for her (anybody can get one without a problem) but I wasn't sure if that causes a problem with the social security number that she will receive..
The situation that I'm wondering about is that when I file my tax return and I have both, a Tax ID and a SSN for her, how will I file the tax return? If she has a savings account that receives interest under her TAX ID and then she receives a SSN and I file the tax return with the SSN, the money reported under the Tax ID number will be unreported??? It seems to be a complicated situation..

Nothing complicated about it. My wife started using her SSN once she got it, we updated our accounts and filed taxes with the SSN the following year. Perfectly smooth.

If you have already received your NOAs, take them to the driver's license place, they might do it ( they renewed mine this way).If she is changing her name to the married one, bring your marriage license as well.

Hi kate_83
you said yours was renewed with your receipts from immigration, i have my sister whose i94 is expired, she never applied for drivers licence, do you think she can be issued a drivers licence after passing the tests, with her receipts from immigration, she's married to a usc.

hi,
I am not really sure in your sisters case. You can always try.Has she ever had an ID? See, in my case I had DL and expired EAD, the lady at the DMV said she only need my receipt for renewal of EAD(I-765) and marriage license for a namechange. So, your sister can always try, at least to get an ID first.

Drivers licence

I am not sure about how it works in Florida, but in VA NOA's are proof of "legal presence". I got my DL that way, but one thing I think you definitely need is a SSN.

I had brought all my NOA's but it seems they were mainly interested with my NOA for I-765 (EAD).

Although NOA's have no validity date, they gave me a 1 year licence, so that may be the guidelines for people with NOA's (1 year DL) probably because EAD's are valid 1 year I guess.

I went to SSA office to apply for my wife's Social Security card based on EAD (She previously had Tax ID #), I also filled an application for myself to replace my card which was issued in 2001 based on my H1B visa and says "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH INS AUTHORIZATION" but this lady at SSA office told me that even with EAD I will get SS card which says "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH INS AUTHORIZATION" and this restriction will be removed only after getting Permanent Resident Status (Green Card), Anyone who received SS card based on EAD please share your experience.

She's absolutely right. You will not get an unannotated SS card until you get your GC.
