SSN issuance delay/ A# not found in DB

So,

one goes to SSAn office and applies for a SSN, but they cannot issue a request for printing because applicant's Alien # is still not in database.
Originally, they say it will take no longer than 30 days to get everything verified & have the card in mail. However, a telephone call to the office sevaral days later to check ststus reveals the fact that things are done somewhat different than in my post below: now, they say, it may take 4-6 weeks to get verification ONLY...
1800 number vs local ofice number is another nightmare because their explanations of procedures and timelines do not match...

So for all of you wanting to apply for SSN right away, if you want to avoid this nightmare, please wait two weks after receipt of the EAD and apply then...

I am on day 8 and nothing has been updated yet..

However, there is nothing, but your own time, to prevent you from going to the office each week and applying for SSn over and over again. they will see that you have applied i their DB, then you tell them to check SAVE for your A# match...this is the only way to get this info. I tried nicely over the phone but had no success..

Please share your stories and experiences here, as the resources for discussing this subject on the web are very scarce...

Thanks,

GM

My wife went one year ago and was told that they are going to check with the USCIS, after 4 weeks they sent us a letter that every then is OK, one week later SS card arrived.

GeneMaster,

I wish I had read ur post earlier...

We went to the SSAn office to apply for my spouse's SSN today. Her EAD (1st EAD) had been approved on 4/2 and card received om 4/7. After waiting for over an hour, the officer told her that he cannot accept her application since her A# is not yet in the system. As per him, the A# should be in their system by 4/16..that's about 2 week since the approval.

No SSN application..but I hope, when they do accept the application, it will be processed quickly.

Keep the thread going...

Like I said before, it is important to have a thread like this because one cannot find many on the web.
I was also told that the "verification" will take up to 2 weeks, but I simply cannot trust them as the stories of the desk clerk and whoever answers the phone ( in the same office!) do not match. One says that the system of verification and updates is "pretty good and reliable" while the other says they have nothing to do with it and that the check is being done by DHS in 4-6 weeks....

Icici, let's hope they are right in your case. This means the card request will be issued on 4/16-4/17 and the card will be in your (your spouse's) hands by the end of the month...

Which SSN office locations are these ?

Just to add more value to this thread, can you please post the SSN office location you had been to ?? In that way i can be certain this impacts my spouse's application too.. She will most probably go to the SSN office in Trenton, NJ. - Thanks

For sure it differ from office to office and from person handling your application to other (no strict roles). As I posted above, my wife went immediately after she received her EAD and they allow her to file the application and they confirmed or they waited till update I do not know and send her the card after 5 weeks. If you are in hurry to get the SS do a trial you will lose one hour waiting or so, if not in hurry just wait for two weeks or so.

what about location ??

It is obvious from the thread that it differs from office to office...that is why i am asking for the location so that i can avoid the troublesome ones.
Your reply does not seem to help answer my question...is it a problem letting know the SSN office location your wife had been to ??

Not in the system

Today my wife went to the SSN office in Trenton, NJ. Her application was accepted despite the lady in the counter said that her info is not in the system yet. She also mentioned that it was normal and that in 4 weeks the SSN usually arrives subject to verification confirmation. I am thinking of revisiting end of the month sometime to enquire about progress..

Wait it out

Cyberbabu,
you are better off simply waiting it out.
I called the office today and was very close to being hung up on. When they find out that your application has been filed less than 30 days ago, the line they use goes something like this: "we told you in the letter 30 days and ONLY then call us back, why are you doing this".
Well, because it is their JOB to give us info, even if we call every day.
Now, it gets better. Even though they need some time to retreive the info, it was quickly reported that the case was "still pending authorization" and that it takes "4 to 6 weeks for the DHS to verify this info"
I think the document I posted here earlier states that a local SSN office HAS to check A# against SAVE database 10 days after the application has been filed.
So, it might be worth inquiring over the phone, because the info will be the same regardless of how yo contact them.
I know I said that one can go to the office and re-apply over and over again, but at least in my case, they now have the number in the system, probably along with the log of all inquiries and are very rude if they see multiple inquiries...

So, I hope your wife got the letter stating that her info is subject to verification and that if she does not hear from them in 30 days she should contact the office, right? The letter should contain a reference number to use in further inquiries...

Yes, she did receive a receipt letter confirming her application. I will give them a call after about 2-3 weeks and take it from there. Nevertheless the SSN office is only about 15-20 mins drive and is barely crowded, today she returned home within 1 hr, it was so unbelievably quick.
Also, she is in no rush; i believe the EAD and the SSN receipt is good enough to start working. And I have hardly heard someone not receiving a SSN after the EAD is issued..

Thanks for your tips. Lets hope it comes in 4 weeks..and get past this one other headache.

Baltimore is FAST!!!

OK, here's how fast they can work when they want to:

A friend submitted SSN application on Monday (he had the "not allowed to work" SSN card from back in college days) but nevertheless they had to look him up (A#) in the database. His application was accepted and the SSN card was mailed from baltimore on Thursday!!!
He got it in the mail today.

Received SSN

My wife received her SSN today. She applied on 04/13 and received it in the mail today on 04/26. The physical SSN has a date stamp of 04/19 so I guess they were able to verify her status quickly. Good luck everyone..
