Hi people, I just applied for the SSn here in Orlando FL, and got a letter saying it might take up to 4 weeks to get the card. I wonder if anybody has gone through this and how long did it take here in Orlando???

That's a little specific. It takes upto 4 weeks from any office. Your file is sent to a central office in Baltimore for matching up with USCIS info.

I have an appt as part of relocation assistance for 1 month and the four months of the card expire 5 days after my appt (same thing with exchaning my quebecs drivers licencce for florida one).

If they dont make it before my appt expires not sure how i will do.
All suggestions are welcome.

In Mass I got the Number on the very next day of applying, by showing the proof of application and identity. In fact they told me I can get the number after 24 hrs of applying and they gave me the number next day
 
What is an appt? What is the four months? What is the one month? We don't quite understand what you are talking about?
 
appt is an appartment (a portion of a larger building which a person -- called a tenant -- rents out to live in)

Most professionals moving between jobs are given a relocation package (from one to three months) which usually includes a free place to live.

4 weeks (the post was corrected) is a generally accepted equivalent of a month (7 calendar days make up a week, 12months make up a year (a "solar" year, the time it takes for the earth to revolve around the sun).

Okay Mr. Smarty pants I get it.

If she has to move from her apartment, then the SS card will go to her apartment where she no longer lives.

I believe the USPS (That's U.S. Postal Service in case you weren't sure) has something known as "Mail forwarding". It's a great service if you move. You should try it some time.:cool:

And thanks for clearing up the issue about the solar year as I was confused because sometimes I work on Klingon time and sometimes on Vulcan time. :D

I know about the forwarding your mail feature... but without the ssn i cant do anything, rent an appt, get a cell, etc etc.

I know k_nraj obatained it the following day. I was willing to visit the office in 3 weeks to see if they have it, i think they should.

Any ideas, information? Please help.

First of all I was only joking to nelsona about forwarding the mail. Come on, I don't think anyone is that naive.

Definitely go to the SSN office. That's your best bet. At least you might be in the system already and be able to get a number. I understand what you mean about trying to rent an apartment.

Here's a suggestion.....the SSN for the apartment is only for a credit check. Same thing for a car or anything else you might need. Even if you get an SSN, it won't reveal anything about your past cresidt history because you do not exist in the U.S. System.

Equifax is one of the major credit reporting agencies in the U.S. They also own the Candian credit reporting agency. If you haven't learned anything yet since you have been here, your credit score rules your life (at least it does in California). Welcome to America - I'd like you to meet FICO - the new ruler of your life. Everything you do will revolve around your FICO score. Try and get a copy of your Canadian Equifax report and take that wherever you go. I did it back in 1996 and it helped quite a bit for the first little while.

Appt is the standard abbreviation for appointment, apt is apartment. It was initially confusing. As a pubic servant, I have no experience with relocation packages and how they are negotiated but is it possible to ask for an extra week?
 
Glad you found it Carmen.

Get a copy of it and keep it everywhere you go for now. The fact that it says Equifax will help you a little bit. With the Florida real estate market in a complete melt down, you probably won't have too much trouble renting something because many people who bought places expecting to flip them are stuck trying to rent them out. So I think regardless of the credit check, you will be okay.

BTW.....like heresmine said, try not to use too many acronyms as we don't always understand what you might be talking about.
 
don't worry carmen. When I see Appt and relo in the same sentance, I know what you are talking about.
 
Let me re-phrase my question, I got TN February 1st, started working Feb 4th, applied for SSN Febraury 5th, the 4 weeks are due the March 4th.

Question
When would be the safest soonest (meaning when should they have the number and provide it to me) to go to the SS office to get my number? (until I wait for my card)

I think this Q has been beaten to death. There is nothing "unsafe" about asking for your number today
