SSN for spouse - How to apply?

My Spouse ( on H4 ) got a work permit. How can I get an SSN for her?
We are residents of NJ and I work in NYC. Can we apply over the net?

Go to http://www.ssa.gov/

Navigate the website to find the nearest SSA office. You can not apply online. Go to the nearest SSA office and apply. Take EAD card and passport with you.

if you live in edison(near metropart) there is an office on the same street. i was told that it is taking approximatly 3 months to get a
ss number. ss office is required to do a check with ins, and this is what is causing the delay.
 
Can one work without SSN, pending application?

has applied for SSN but currently dos not have one?
 
1.5 MONTHS

Now days, before issuing SSN on Work Permit, they check with INS(They\'ll take photocopy of EAD and send to INS) and in this process it takes around 40 - 45 days (you know how fast they work).

It depends where you are applying, I heard in some SSN office they dont go for this process and within week or two they issue SSN.

For my wife, it took around 45 Days.
 
First timers have to apply in person

SSN cannot be applied by mail or internet. Through website www.ssa.gov get the nearest social security office. take EAD , Advance Parole, Passport and I-94 (Whatever documents required to show you have valid status to work). YOu will be given a receipt and actual SSN card arrives by mail in 2-4 weeks.
I dont think employers employ you without SSN. Though with valied ITIN (Tax Payer ID number) one shud be able to work.
