Prior to receiving my GC at the end of 2007, I used to file my taxes to IRS using TIN (Tax-id-number) numbers for my spouse and children. After getting the GC we have obtained SSN's for them.

For several years I have used their TIN numbers to file taxes. Will switching to SSN suddenly cause any problems (special audits) at the IRS side.

Anybody in similar situation before?. How did you solve it?.

Thanks in advance.

I have also filed my current taxes with SSN for my family after using TIN for several years. The only issue I had was that my tax software did not allow me to digitally sign the return. This should not cause any other issues.
Alternative suggestion is to call IRS (Accounts) and have your family's TIN updated with their new SSN before you file.

TIN is for people without SSN, so you should start using SSN for them. But I'm not sure if you are required to notify IRS about the switch - a call to their customer service should solve the problem.

There should not be any problem. May be reqiuired to signing 8453-OL.

The ITIN Notice has the instructions

We need to inform the IRS, so they can update their records accordingly. A person cannot have both an ITIN and an SSN.

Instructions are given on the letter that came with the ITIN card:

"... When you receive an SSN, please send a copy of your social security card, along with a copy of this notice to the address listed above, so that we can update our records."

IRS said they will link accouts together

I had this problem about 2 years ago and I called IRS, was told I didn't need do anything. somehow they can link ITIN with new SSN in their system.

Probably based on your previous Tax Return and spouse/dependent names I guess.
