SSN Card after successful CP

Hi,

We got our plastic cards recently after arriving in US in mid-Jan after successful CP.

I was on H1 so I already have SSN. My wife doesn't have one as she was on H4 (until before GC).

Now, do we have to go and apply in person at local SS office for my wife to receive a SSN? Or INS automatically notifies SS to send SSN for newly become immigrants?

The confusion is due to following:
There was a question on DS Part-2 form whether the applicant needs a SS after GC and stuff like that...we answered Yes in there.

Question:
So what is better: waiting for SSN in mail or going to local SS office in person...

Could someone pls share their experiences...

Thanks for ur time,

Regards.

Supposedly if you choose the SSN processing option in DS-230 Part II, it should be sent to you. But that is typically not the case.
So, best is to go and apply in person at the SSA office. Note that in addition to applying for your wife's SSN, you should also apply to get the restriction regarding "emplyment with INS authorization" removed from your SSN.
I did all this a few weeks ago. Was a piece of cake. Got the SSN cards in less than 2 weeks. Just make sure you take your passports with you.

Good Luck

I totally concur with paragm:

For your Wife: New SSN application
For you: New SSN card with same number but without the work restriction legend

Both of you can carry passport with I-551 stamp or plastic green card. But I recommend carrying both!

Expect your SSN cards in about 2-3 weeks from date of application.

I have another question regarding the new SSN

Can you apply for new SSN with only the I-551 stamped in the passport. I mean w/o waiting for the Plastic card?

:)

Answer: YEs. Thats what many people do and I did. Carry your passport which has the 551 stamp, go in person, fill out the form and rest the SSA officer will do! Expect the new card in about 2-3 weeks from such application date!

All:

Thats a great point brought out by JoeF that do not surrender your current/ old SSN card when you apply for a new SSN card.
