SSN after L-2 expires

Hi,

Until recently, I was on an L-1 Visa, and my spouse was on an L-2 Visa. Based on her L-2, she got an EAD / SSN #. I have now switched to a H-1 Visa - so her L-2 / EAD are cancelled.

What happens to her SSN - she has credit cards / filed taxes based on this SSN.

Any input on whether this SSN can be used in future (not for a job, but for other purposes) would be appreciated.

Thanks

She will keep her SSN, for life. Even after you leave the US for some time, you can use it after you come back which is very handy since you have built a credit history.

On SSN card, you'll see "valid if INS authorizes". To keep it valid,
your spouse needs to maintain legal status in the US, which is
probably H4 in your case. The SSN itself is yours for your life
and you can use it for whatever you want as long as it's valid.

Hi

Can you please tell me if you got your status changed to H1 from L1 while you were in the US, or did you get the change outside ?

A friend is in a similar situation - and ur feedback will be very useful.

Thanks !
Monu.
