SSA mismatch and FAFSA

My son is a college student. He got his citizenship through naturalization (together with me) in August 2012. A few weeks after naturalization we went to SSA and showed our documents to make status changes. My SSN card was taken away and replaced, because it had work restrictions since the time of being on a working visa, but my son got his first ever SSN after he got his GC. His SSN card was not replaced, but we thought that they had updated his citizenship status. Recently we submitted his documents to FAFSA for his college financial support. Guess what - we got a notice that he must submit proof of his citizenship to FAFSA, because SSA reported him as a non-US citizen! How could this happen? How long does it usually take SSA to update status after reporting about naturalization? It has been over 6 month by now!!! Is this normal? This delay jeopardizes our financial support, how can we straighten out this situation?

That's your problem. They probably didn't. He needs to go back there with a copy of his passport and check to see if they have.

Did you provide proof of citizenship? That seems a lot faster than waiting on SSA.

Thanks. Yes, we have presented the original of his Naturalization Certificate to the Financial Aid Department of the University, they made a copy of both NC and his passport, and said they would submit it to FAFSA for us. I was very busy this week, and did not have a chance to go to the SSA with my son to clear up the situation with his status update. I am also not sure whether they have updated mine - I have not been in a situation when it is needed yet. But we brought originals of our NCs in late August to SSA, so it is surprising that this bureaucracy is so slow.

Goto the ssa office and ask for a supervisor. He/she will fix it.
