My son is a college student. He got his citizenship through naturalization (together with me) in August 2012. A few weeks after naturalization we went to SSA and showed our documents to make status changes. My SSN card was taken away and replaced, because it had work restrictions since the time of being on a working visa, but my son got his first ever SSN after he got his GC. His SSN card was not replaced, but we thought that they had updated his citizenship status. Recently we submitted his documents to FAFSA for his college financial support. Guess what - we got a notice that he must submit proof of his citizenship to FAFSA, because SSA reported him as a non-US citizen! How could this happen? How long does it usually take SSA to update status after reporting about naturalization? It has been over 6 month by now!!! Is this normal? This delay jeopardizes our financial support, how can we straighten out this situation?
