can i apply for ss number ( not valid for work) while my status is F1, to make ID card, DL or simply to buy a car or get insurance? :confused:
 
Since last October new rules dictate that you need to first have an offer of employment on campus, and then you can get SSN. But you can try anyway and get help from your INternational center. You don't need SSN to get DL - you can use ITIN for all other purposes.
