Spouse Name Change after she gets Green Card

Hi Xperts:
    I will soon get married and both me and my wife will go through CP interview after that. I have heard that passport offices in india take more than 15 days to change name on the passport after marriage. I donot have so much vacation, So we plan to go through CP with her current name and change it after she arrives in US.
  Now my question is regarding changing name on the green card once its issued. How easy/fast is it to do that.
 Has anybody else faced simillar issues. Any other alternates/ideas?

Keep the maiden name

As the saying goes..... What\'s in a name :-)

But seriously, I know it is possible. You have to make an affidavit, register in your local courthouse (this may vary from state to state) and advertise in the local paper/gazzette. Then, get the name changed on the passport, which you can do from the local Indian consulate. Then apply to INS for the name change. I heard you can do it at the local INS office, but it will still possibly take months before you get the new card. Also, you will have to get the named changed in Social Security office and IRS (if you have filed tax returns).

Worth it ? Thats your and your spouses call !
 
Changing Name is easier in US

You can get a new Passport issued with new name in one week from US Indian Consulate.

Moreover it is relatively easy to change name for girls.. I am sure there gotta be ways you can change name on the Green card if you so desire once it is issued.
Also if you can prove the identity of the person with two different last names to be infact the same person then you do not really need to go through the name change process. Her old and new pasports together can prove that it is the same person.
I have known girls who have various documents with mismatched last names.(but passport/BC/MC/GC together point to the same person)

This process is Only for First name changes

Last name change for girls is common and you do not need to go through the name change process described by Rajesh Paul. Your marraige certificate and a name change form will suffice for maiden last name change to married last name.
 
Spouse name in GC

Folks

I am getting married a week before CP and will be submitting my spouse\'s Packet 3 during my interview. Since her Passport will have her maiden name, do they issue her GC based on that or would they issue it in the married name based on the Marriage Certificate, please clarify.
