Hi Everyone:

I am a Canadian Immigrant who is due for Citizenship. I have met someone who is visiting Canada on Single Entry Visit Visa which is valid till end of 2004.

Can someone please advise me; If I get married to this person who is visiting Canada on visit visa and I sponsor her while she is in Canada as my spouse. How long will the process take? Will she have to leave Canada once sponsorship process starts? or can she continue to stay until she becomes immigrant of Canada?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Can anyone help with the question? Thanks -- canuck_TO

Yes you can marry and sponsor her within Canada. The process will take about 8 months, but she has to keep her visitor status valid. If CIC feels that she obtained her entry to Canada fraudulently or the marriage is not bone fide they will refuse to process. You should be looking at www.cic.gc.ca under sponsorship.

Thank you PMM. I am just curious if one gets married with in Canada is not bonafide? Does one need to prove that they are married and not for convenience sake? Secondly, that means one has to leave the country if prior expiration of the admit time into the country? Thanks - canuck_TO

Yes, you will have to convince CIC that it is a bona fide marriage.
