Hello,

Am describing my situation below. Would appreciate any advice.

I am a naturalized US Citizen (from India). Both my parents are Indian citizens. My father is currently working in Singapore (for a US company) and has a pretty good job there. I am thinking of applying for Green card for them. My questions are:

- Would it be possible for my father to continue working in Singapore and my parents to continue living there after getting their green card. They can definitely come to the US for a few weeks once their application is approved and can also easily come for a week or 2 every 6 months after that to maintain their status. But would it be ok for them to living outside the US (for atleast a few years) after getting the GC?

- Since my parents live in Singapore, would their case/interview be handled by the Embassy in New Delhi or Singapore?

Any reponses appreciated.

No. They might be able to keep that up pattern for 2 or 3 years, but after that they're likely to lose their green card. Visiting once every 6 months is not sustainable in the long term.

They can probably choose either. US consulates generally will accept applicants who are legal residents of the country where the consulate is located, even if their citizenship is elsewhere. They should contact the consulate in Singapore to make sure.

Jack...

Thanks for your reply. So...they may be able to keep that pattern for 2-3 years. That should be sufficient before they want to permanently move to the US. My father can also try and request a transfer to the US office in that time period.

If that's their plan, after arrival in the US they should apply for a reentry permit which normally authorizes 2 years of stay outside the US (they wouldn't have to return once every 6 months).

Thanks everyone for your responses. I have another question....

My parents have been living outside India for a while now. Their timeline for different places is:

Till April 2001 : India
April 2001 - June 2006 : South Korea (lived for 6 months twice in the US on B1/B2 during this time period)
July 2006 - Sept 2006 : Malaysia
Oct 2006 - March 2007 : USA on B1/B2
April 2007 - January 2009 : Indonesia
Feb 2009 - Present : Singapore

Will they need Police Clearance Certificates from all the countries where they have lived (including India)?

Not for Malaysia or the US, as they were there for less than 6 months (assuming they left the US every time before their 6 months of B1/B2 status expired)

Quick Question:

Is the Police Clearance certificate needed for all countries where an applicant has lived for more than 6 months, or only those where the applicant has lived during the past 5 years?

Thanks
