sponsor views (fulbright)

does anyone know who provides sponsor views in a NO waiver petition for a fulbright j-1? is it fulbright usa or the local fulbright in the country that sent you?

It's the one in the US, I have seen recommendations to get support from your local Fulbright. Please keep your questions in one thread, info gets lost easily and there are so few Fulbrights who are sharing their stories. Wish you the best, keep us posted!

will do - thanks. little puzzled why it would take 6+ weeks for answer then (other than overload?)

No idea about the time line. I would think the request might be reviewed by several members, probably time is needed for them to meet, discuss, etc.

I can only guess that the decision is country and/or discipline specific and they definitely review everything case-by-case.

I remember myself going through the process, I can empathize what you are going trough. I received positive response, so all the worries were worth it

Nemu, does the DoS website get updated when they receive sponsor views or it updated directly with the final DoS recommendation?

Yes, they update the website. In my case, DoS made the decision as soon as they received sponsor views. You will see "Favorable Recommendation" on the top right hand conner. Before the decision is made it says "in processes?\" or something line that.

The only thing - I am not sure how good they are about updating the web. If I remember correctly, there is a date that shows last time your case was updated, but even if that date changes, if does mean someone looked at your case. I think the database gets automatic updates once in a while.

So I got my no from Fulbright (i.e. I know it will be no even though DoS doesn't know yet). Now we'll have to see if the rest of my arguments regardign benefits to the U.S. will outweigh their argument of a loss to Fulbright's principles.

Sorry to hear that. What were your program goals? In my case it was "cultural exchange" and I made the argument that I am still continuing with Fulbright goals (teaching intercultural communication). Your program goals were probably worded differently.

I can't recall. In any event, my argument is a little different than yours - trying to make a case that higher (U.S.) interests outweigh the interests of an agency (Fulbright).

I suppose that it should take 1-2 weeks for the info to travel back to DoS and then another 1-2 weeks for them to decide now that Fulbright has formed a view...

PS: It is the local Fulbright commission that decides whether to tell DoS Yes or No when sponsor views are requested. Fulbright US serves just as a channel to get to the local commission.

The goals of the program should be on your J1 paperwork. I am still curious about the wording. As far as I understand - this is the key in getting the waiver as the reasons given should outweigh Fulbright goals. Hope it still works out in your case.

Good info regarding local Fulbright Commissions. My country does not have one. In my case Fulbright was administered by USIA (US Info Agency) there is no specific Fulbright Commission. This would explain a quick 3 week turn around in my case as the decision was made in the US.

Interesting. Where are you from? My country had to wait for the [monthly] bi-national commission board meting so that must have bought me at least 4 weeks right off the bat.

You make a good point that I had not focused on too much. It's "to promote mutual understanding and cooperation by awardign and administering grants to qualified foreign nationals to study and/or pursue professional development at an accredited [educational institution] or other selected institutions or organizations in the U.S." Not sure I can spin this into staying in the U.S. forever but it is broad enough to argue that my petition isn't directly aimed against it either.

Did you see this thred? http://boards.immigrationportal.com/showthread.php?t=191084

It would be good to keep info in one place I am referencing for future users. This website is really slow and info gets lost with so many users and new posts. I am convinced that personal statement has to deal with Fulbright goals in some way. running_swede argued that he will be of more value to his country if he stayed. Mine was similar - I said I am continuing with Fulbright goals. Fulbright is fundamentally about helping other countries, so you statement has to prove that Fulbright goals are being considered.

You may try interested government agency if this does not go through. I know hardship is difficult to prove.

In any case, I am glad you sharing your story - not too many Fulbrighters seem to be willing to do so but there is a rumor that getting a waiver is becoming easier.

I agree with you conceptually but can't really make that argument in my case. I am arguing that I am more valuable to the U.S. if I stay here as opposed to my country if I return... Should know the outcome in the next month (seems to be the general rule once sponsor views have been obtained) and will let you all know.

waiting for sponsor views

I am still waiting for my sponsor views. 3 weeks done, and i do not know how long it will take. Waiting is really difficult.:(

sponsor views still waiting...

I am an ex-Fulbrighter. It shows on my j-1 visa waiver application that sponsor views were requested on April 13, 2011 and three weeks have passed and i am still waiting for the sponsor views.:(

I'm also an ex-Fulbrighter. In my case, the sponsor views were requested in January, but there has been no updates since. A secretary told me that the person working on my case was extremely busy, but 3+ months seems a bit too long if you ask me.

Anyways, good luck!
