Sponsor citizenship for parents

A friend of mine recently naturalized, and has got his US citizenship. His parents are over 60 years of age, and he is interested in sponsoring them for US citizenship. Is this possible? Does he need to first sponsor them for a green card and then have them apply after a 5 year gap for US citizenship. Or can he directly sponsor them for US citizenship? Thanks in advance for your advise.

Can't really sponsor anyone for citizenship. He'd have to apply for a Green Card for his parents and they can apply for citizenship once they've lived in the US for 5 years after they get their green card.
