My Lawyer is asking $2000 on my approval. My old company A paid more than $5000 and now he is asking for more. Company A was merged with another company before my approval. I left that company A after 6 months of I-485 filing and joined company B. The statement he sent through e-mail has BILL TO of old company. I never paid a cent to that guy, since I negotiated my salary with old company to process my green card on their expense.

What do you think ?

Have you signed any contract with the attorney ?

Ask your attorney to send a copy of the contract with your old company. Also, ask specifically what is that $2000 for. Ask him/her to itemize the bill, if possible. As far I understand your old company already paid for the filing fees.

I've never heard of a lawyer getting paid 'a bonus' on approval. $5000 is more than enough to take an application through to approval. Anway, if you PERSONALLY do not have a contract with that lawyer, then you are under no personal obligation. If he is trying to bill the old company, then that is a matter between the lawyer and the old company.

I had my own lawyer and I signed contract with him. We agreed to distributed payments during various stages of my application. Upon my GC approval, I sent him the last payment for the remaining balance.

You probably need to see their contract to find out if this is within the pre-agreed payment schedule. Or if the lawyer claims that he did some extra work, demand some evidence from him.

But since he is already approved in September, what can the lawyer do for non-payment ?

I mean you can go get it stamped using your courtesy copy and then the card will follow.
As I see it, the lawyer cannot "cancel" the approval - right ??

Even then the lawyer cannot withhold document on the basis of non payment, at best he can file a civil suit against your for debt collection.

If you haven't signed any contract with the lawyer, then you are not liable for anything. That is the stand you need to take. You have certainly signed the G8 to give the lawyer rights to represent you but without a contract being signed you are not liable.

Sad to see you in a quandry after a successful approval.

I've used courtesy copy to got passport stamped. Lawyer's office responded and told that, they are going to send the statement to the merger company.

I dont remember signing any kind of contract. I barely remember one thing that when I asked about the payments at the time of filing, lawyer said my sponsoring company is paying.

Lets see how it goes.
