Folks,
I was generally browsing Monster and Modi's (a decent firm) had posted this. A background check is acceptable. But why a credit check, that too even before being submitted to the client and you have no way of know how it will be (mis)used? I did read some where that identity thieves use these job boards for collecting personal information.

Any thoughts on this?

****Must pass a credit check before being submitted to client.

If you are available and interested in this job or know of anyone that might be please email

Actually, you could be wrong. A friend just got a job recently with an American company, and they compulsorily ran a credit check. A credit check is run to make sure of your character and responsible behaviour. The logic behind this is that if you can't handle your own finances, can you be trusted to be responsible in your job.

Usually, employees who have bad credit history, end up being bad workers. This is standard, besides you will be surprised how many people have your social security number in any case. You do a credit check in any case before getting an apartment, electric connection, etc..

If the company is reputable, then no harm in allowing for a credit check. They have to give you a copy though, and promise not to disclose the contents to anyone. So if they don't then you can sue them! :) $$$

I would say .. hire me first, and keep this as the last filter .. I wouldn't give out SSN's to idiots I don't know

FYI

Guys,

I know that most of the creditable Banking institution like CapitalOne Bank etc. require you to go thru a background as well a credit check.

Some comnpany's also need the SSN # at the time you submit your resume inorder to check whether you have ever worked with them in the past and also to verify with the SSN that you are legally allowed to work in the USA. (e.g Ford, Chrysler, BCBS, DTE, TXU, Honeywell etc.)

Have fun !!

It's funny. Why someone should use SSN for this, I know fast scientific method for this.

I wouldn't do it .. unless someone from Honeywell or capitalone came upto me and asked for it, and then I'd say .. I can produce all proofs that I am eligible to work, which you are free to check ONLY AFTER the rest of the negotiations.

Use ur judgement, I've seen desi consulting companies ask for SSNs.

zion,140_takes_4ever, nobody told that there are no background checks, but reliable company will do background check at least after interview.

Exactly my point.

Credit Check

XYZ cannot run credit check unless we authorize by signing. Few companies do run your credit score if they intend to hire you,
below are few resons to check your score

1) Previous employment record(UnEmployment benefit...)
2) Liablity informatio
3) etc...

if somebody requests your credit information before offering job and you not knowing any particulars about it, sounds like an identity theft. Again these are information known to my knowledge. be careful and act wisely. GOOD LUCK

Just my two cents: As soon as I arrived to the USA as an employee of a "contracting agency", they found me a contract in Fujitsu. Fujitsu asked for a credit check for me, but I had't had an SSN at the time. So they said they would do the credit check later, I just needed to sign the release for it and they would fill the SSN later.
They never did the check after all.

When I joined Intel Corporation, they did do a background check and that too with my written permission and after the interview and selection process. So I was kinda surprised when they said they needed a credit check even to submit resume to the client.

Sorry, thought you were already working for the company and this was secondary. But yeah, tell them your concerns if they are smart they will work around it after understanding your point of view.

It is illegal to ask for SSN and DOB until a job offer is made and the candidate has accepted the offer. In our company(approx..45000 employees), we ask for the SSN and DOB for prehire processes like background checks, network login accounts, email setup etc.. We don't do credit checks.
