I can see lot of approvals past few days and weeks. I thought to start this thread, "Now got GC what next", What are the all the Benefits of having a Green card and being a permanent resident ?.
Everyone please can post their perspective and ideas to go from here.

I think of GC this way: It is one of those things in life which when you do not have, makes your life miserable. Ironically, you need it to just to get away from it’s clutches. When you don’t have it, every major decision is constrained by it (eg., taking up a new job, making a major purchase like a house). In fact, your life seems to revolve around it.
When you get it, it is one less of an artificial problem thrown out from your life.

The other thing I think that comes close is money.
 
GC is just another problem. Money is what always count. And those
people who say money is not everything are fools.

And getting GC allows you to make more money. So go ahead and
make all that money.

Your aim in life should always be making lot of money. And that is
true for most people here. But not having GC sometimes distract you
from making all that money.

But once you have GC then you should refocus. And get back to
making all that money.

Life is very long. You are going to live 100 years since modern medical
technology is improving a lot. Social security will go bankrupt soon. So
you need to earn all that money for retirement.

How much do you need? Lets say you need 100K every year after retirement
and you retire at 60 you need about 4 million dollars.

So make money, money and money. :D

A thread is already available on the forum: Life after the Green Card. You might have observed the changes in before and after green card. The outcome of having Green Card is Freedom. Enjoy your freedom.

Money is everything!!!!

To me GC means (in order of importance):

1. Job related. Easy to get another job. Or even doing another side consultacy/contract. If you are layed off - eligibility for claiming unemployment benefit (that can give you enough time to find another good job).

2. Not to worry about visa renewal, extention, expiry in periodical basis.

3. Visa term-limit - like 6 years limit for H1. I don't need to worry about packing up within X months/years and move to some other country (i.e. own country). I can do it in my own wish, time and pace.

4. At POE, not standing on long line for visitors. Citizen/PR line is shorter and faster.

5. Once in a while trip to neighbor countries (like Mexico) without visa. Even for some of the European countries I don't need visa anymore.

6. Perticipate in the democratic process. Well, I cannot vote. But still I can do lots of things that are not allowed for non-immigrants/visitors.

7. Eligibility for various higher education loans that are available only for citizens and PRs.

From what I read on the USCIS page, you can vote on some local and state elections - that's not restricted to just citizens.

Not sure what that is -- maybe vote on just the propositions ??

I notice that people make assumptions when addressing others on this forum:

1) country of origin is India
2) gender is male

This is not neccesarily so.

handle. And people do tend to realize than I am an Indian based on
my handle.

But you are right. People should not assume gender nor country of origin.

Gica? U think you won't live for 100 years? :D

My great grand father lived for 35 years, My grand father for 50 years.
My Father is already 70 and still alive thanks to all the modern medical
technology. So 100 years is not a bad assumption for us. No? :confused:

Sometimes I try to use "he/she", "his/her" words. But as usual I am a lazy, slow and bad typist. So I don't follow this rule always. I prefer my ol' Bengali (my mother tounge and the place of India where I am from) style - no gender difference in language - all the pronouns are in common gender. Human civilizations invented gender specific words ("he", "she") for the purpose of descrimination.

Yes, some of the county/city offices are allowing non-citizens to vote. Especially all the elections for district school boards. That makes sense because the children of non-citizens go to school therefore should be allowed to vote. In fact, some cases the parents are not citizens, but their children are.

But it did not happen in state level - therefore non-citizens cannot perticipate in propositions.

Ironically, when govt does redistricting and determines electoral colleges (for presidential election) based on the population, they count all the heads (citizens + non-citizens).
