My husband's green card was approved a month back and we sent the passport copies and approval notice to his parents in india as they had the interview for their visitor visa yday.

my in-laws had an interview yday in Mumbai consulate and they had selected an interpreter prior to interview but when the interview started the officer started asking questions in english and my father in law (since he can speak english very well) asnwered the questions. Officer only asked them where he worked before he retired, what does his son do in US and is he married. The she asked him who is going to support them and about the finance. Father in law presented I 134 , last 2 yrs W2, bank statements that we had sent from here. Then they were told that their visa has not been rejected and they will be contacted in 3 weeks. They were given a letter and their passports back and they were asked to leave. THATS IT !

When they came out they saw the letter which says that under section 221g their application needs additional documentation and once the documentation has been obtained then they can go any working day at 10:30am at the consulate office and reapply.
There is a list below this heading in that letter and nothing is checked.

1. Pls provide financial documentation
2. pls provide notarized passport/visa copies of ..........
3. your application requires additional clearance and we will contact you in 3 weeks.
4. provide letter of employment , bank statement , W2 etc etc

and list goes on and on

Now my in-laws dont know what to do and they dont know what is needed (if at all they need to provide any additional paperwork).

Has anyone experienced this ??
Pls help ..

Thanks

3. your application requires additional clearance and we will contact you in 3 weeks.

You said that the officer also mentioned about getting back to them in 3 weeks time ??

So maybe are they trying to run some kind of checks ? - Don't know ...

Did the officer take their fingerprints ? Maybe security checks ?

yeah thats what we are also guessing but has anyone experienced this before ? what checks would they be running ? on parents or on son ?

by the way, on the US embassy site of india also mentions this ..

If you have been requested to wait until the Embassy contacts you, please do
not make an appointment. Your case requires further administrative
processing and the Embassy will contact you once this has been completed.

This is only mentioned on chennai and delhi (not on mumbai).. what administrative processing would that be ? any help would be appreciated..

Thanks

Were your in-laws fingerprinted ?
If so, maybe they select random cases to run checks with the database they have here ( and maybe even in their home country ).

I don't think they would run a check on the son in USA - but there is no definitive answer either.

Or it might be a situation where they need verify some facts of the documents submitted ?

Anyways this is the first am hearing about this - keep us updated when something develops
( Btw, technically this is still not a 221(g) denial ! )

yeah you are right.. its not denial because they were specifically told that the application has not been rejected. They were fingerprinted even before they went for interview on the same day. Thats the new procedure. They didnt ask for any more documents so how will they check for anything in the documents ? Name check should not be a problem as their names are normal names like manohar and jayashree.

anything else that rings bell ?? I have also heard this for the first time so very curious and upset too :(

I have a good news to share. My in-laws got a call from mumbai consulate last friday 9/10 telling them that the additional clearance/processing is done and they have the clearance to get the visa. they asked them to come for interview any time.
My in-lawas went on Tuesday 9/14 (sat/sun the office is closed and they didnt want to go on mon as it was not an auspicious day..). They were asked some std questions and then were granted visa. they didnt if it was for 6 months or 10 yrs to they waited till they received the passports by couriers and then they informed us that they got 10 yrs visa.

I have no idea what they did but they did get some clearance from US I guess.

Wow -- that's good news ....

It was definitely not 3 weeks though ;)

btw, are your inlaws > 60 yrs ? Atleast one of them ??
I don't think they are giving 10 yr visas to everyone these days !

my father in law is over 60 but mom in law is not. I am not sure if they r giving everyone 10 yrs or not.

everything seems alright thought. another thing was that while they were there, they met some other ppl who had same 221(g) case. so it may be more frequent than we think.
