Hi all,

Can anyone post your experience for getting a SSN after you get the green card? Do we need to put old SSN information in D-230 part II and will receive the SSN card automatically. Or we still need to show up in the local SSA office in person?

Is it mandatory to do so? I got GC last month and i haven't changed my SSN yet.

If you already have a SSN you don't need to apply for a new one. You just go to the SS office and get a new card, same number, with the "Work only with DHS authorization" restriction removed. It is very easy process.

there is no need to change your current card if you don't want to, but makes it easier when applying for a new job since you won't show the restriction.

If you want the restriction wording removed from your card (which can be helpful when using the card at the DMV, or a new employer), just visit your local SSA office. We did that once my wife and I got our GCs in 2004. 2 weeks later, our new cards arrived in the mail. The SSA office verified our status on the spot using their computer system.

Getting an updated SS Card is not mandatory, it is a matter of personal preference. We just preferred to have 'clean' documents, so to speak.

It seems like you already have an SSN and card... so I am not sure if you are asking whether you need to apply for one again or not...

If your work eligibility has changed or if have become a U.S. citizen, you must apply for a replacement card. Your replacement card will no longer read “Not Valid for Employment,” but you will retain the same Social Security number.

I stand corrected. It now appears that changing your card is mandatory once your status changes.

Some people informed that their revised status after approval of GC is not yet loaded to SSN system and they are requested to wait for a week or so. It is safe to wait for atleast a week before requesting SSN office to issue a new one

As Vegaj suggested, you can go to your local Social Security Office the next day or anytime later. SSA will verify and update your records in due course and mail you a new card in 2 to 3 weeks.

I don't know about the mandatory part. I never got mine updated after I got my GC in 2001. I didn't switch jobs in the last 5-6 years either and so I can't think of any place where I was asked to show my SS card.

In any case I became a US citizen recently and got my SS card finally updated. If you do get a chance to do it soon, you probably should but I don't know of any rule in place that says you should do it within a specific time period.

I got a new ssn card with the same SSN with "no restriction words" on the card two weeks ago after I got my GC. You need to go your local SSA with GC and your old SSN card. They will mail a new one to you in a week or so. It is a very simple process.

My experience at Dallas

I applied for a replacement Social Security card (Form SS-5) at Dallas on 08/30/07 and surrendered the old card (with restriction). Today (09/07/07) I received the new card (without the restrictions) in mail.
