Social Security Number from NJ, H4 to H1

Hi,
The social security offices in NJ have not taken my application for social security number until Oct 1st 2006, start date of my H1B. I have applied fo SSN on Oct2nd, 2006 at Newark SSN office, they said that it will take upto 16weeks by the time i receive my SSN.
My employer is a consulting firm and without SSN i cant take up contracts because the client asks for it. I cannot work until i get SSN eventhough my H1 is valid from Oct1st 2006.
I am not sure if its ok, that i dont get paid until I receive my Social security number, being on H1 status.
Please suggest regarding this.

I have a letter from SSN office that SSN has been applied. It said, it takes 4 weeks in print. But the SSN office stroke that and wrote 16 by hand on top of it before they gave the letter to me.

waiting for SSN in Seattle, WA

Hi,

I am waiting for my SSN in Seattle, WA. Its been 1 month i haven't received any reply. Can you tell me how much time normally it takes for SSN and whether it depends on the state where you live in? I have also changed my visa from H-4 to H-1. Please help.
