Social Security Number for new H1

Hi,

On July I got the H1 INS approval notice; On Sept 26 I went to the SS office and I could not get the SSN.

Reason: It is not Oct 1 2006 yet, so SS office cannot process such SSN request.

I was told by the Redwood City SS office inCalifornia that the SSN could take 4 weeks to be issued; this is after requesting such SSN on Oct 2 2006.

Is this normal? actually it implies that despite the INS approval notice states that the H1 visa is valid from Oct 1 2006 to October 1 2009; I cannot get a SSN until Nov 1 2006, which means
a) the amerciaan company that sponsored me cannot use my brain/work until nov 2006
b) I am loosing a month of salary.

I assume "a" and "b" are valid because the employer cannot fill any paperwork (W-2,insurance,payroll) due to the lack of SSN.

Any similar experiences? any SS office (in the California Bay area) that issues such SSN the *same* day of the request?

As far as I understand from the SS agent the reason of the delay is that the SS needs to check with ImmigrationOffice that such H1 is valid; if that is the case how would it take 4 weeks?

It took more than two months for my wife to get her SSN and he recruiter didn't want to start marketing till she got her SSN. Have said, I also know of cases where employee starts working for company before getting SSN (some times even pending H1B approval), but the paperwork/payroll processing was done after the SSN was issued. So it dependens on how the company wants to handle it.

I have also a new H1B.

- I entered into USA at 2 September. (Everyone said I can not!)
- I applied for SSN at 12 September. (Everyone said I can not apply before 1st October!)
- I get my SSN 26 September. (Everyone said I can get it min. within 6 weeks!)

FYI. :)

You can work until your SSN comes through... companies usually will give a temporary SSN (the HR will know, if you are sufficiently large company).

4 weeks is the estimate, one of my friend got his SSN in 2 weeks, and another got it after more than 2-3 months!

I dont know any california center that will give the SSN the same day.

- If you mean approval and date on it, it is 1st October as others. I will start to work at this Monday.
